How to Care for Your Christmas Tree

Keep your tree fresh, fragrant, and looking sharp all December. Follow these steps from field to living room.

1) Selecting and preparing the tree

- Pick a tree that looks lively. Needles should be green, flexible, and not snap when bent.

- Give the tree a gentle shake. A few brown inner needles falling is normal. Lots of green needles dropping means it is too dry.

- Make sure the trunk is straight and will fit your stand without shaving the sides. A snug, vertical fit helps the tree drink properly.

- Before the tree goes into the stand, make a fresh cut across the base. Remove about 1–2 cm to reopen the pores so it can take up water. Do this just before placing it in water.

2) Siting the tree at home

- Keep the tree away from fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, and strong sun through windows. Heat speeds up drying.

- Choose the coolest suitable spot in the room with light airflow.

- If you are using a live potted tree, limit indoor time and acclimatise it in a cooler sheltered area first.

3) Watering and hydration

- Use plain fresh tap water. Do not add sugar, aspirin, bleach, soft drink, or commercial mixes. Tests show additives do not help and can harm.

- Choose a stand with a generous reservoir. Trees often drink the most in the first 24–48 hours. Check the level morning and night.

- Never let the water drop below the cut face. If it dries out, the base can seal and block uptake even after refilling.

4) Decorating and lighting

- Use modern LED or low-heat lights. They run cooler and reduce drying and fire risk.

- Switch lights off overnight and when you are out. Check cords and plugs for wear before use.

- Let the branches relax for a few hours before heavy ornaments. Avoid overloading fine tips.

5) Monitoring and simple fixes

- Check water daily. If you notice fast needle drop or drooping, recheck heat sources and top up the stand.

- A very thin fresh slice on the base can help if the tree has sealed and you can safely re-cut.

6) End of season and responsible disposal in Christchurch

- Remove all decorations and lights.

- Chop the tree into smaller pieces and place in your green organics bin, or take it to an EcoDrop green waste site in Bromley, Wigram, or Redwood. Standard charges may apply.

- Do not put the tree in general rubbish or recycling.

- Do not burn the tree indoors. Dry branches ignite quickly and burn very hot.

7) Quick checklist

- Big water reservoir

- Plain water only

- Cool location

- LED lights
